Shakespeare on the Rocks is a Rockaway-based performance collective dedicated to reimagining classic theater through the lens of our community’s stories, voices, and lived experiences.

Founded by Elwin Cuevas and Robert Bryn, we create bold and accessible productions that break down barriers and bring people together in unexpected ways. Our work is driven by the belief that theater should be shared, inclusive, and deeply rooted in the communities it serves.

A Collective Built on Unity

At Shakespeare on the Rocks, diversity and collaboration sit at the core of everything we do. Our ensemble brings together local artists, youth performers, educators, and neighbors working side by side to create work that reflects the heart of the Rockaways.

Through free public performances, open rehearsals, and community-centered programming, we continue to build a theater movement grounded in compassion, belonging, and the joy of coming together.

Our Inaugural Production:

Romeo & Juliet

Our debut production, Romeo & Juliet, reimagined the iconic tragedy as a modern reflection of “a house divided.” Set on Rockaway Beach, the show centered on the fractures, tensions, and hopes that shape our neighborhoods today.

What emerged was not only a powerful artistic statement, but a communal event. Audiences from across the peninsula came together—families, youth, longtime residents, newcomers—and the production became a moment of shared unity.

The response was overwhelming: the show received heartfelt acclaim from the local community, and earned positive attention from the press, celebrating its creativity, accessibility, and its ability to bring people together in a time when connection is needed most.
